NGC 6522 is the name of a globular cluster in the constellation Sagittarius . The globular cluster is approximately 20,000 light years (6.1 kpc) apart. Like the nearby globular cluster NGC 6528, it is located in the so-called Baade window , in whose direction of view towards the galactic center the view is not obscured by dust from the Milky Way. The globular cluster was discovered on June 24, 1784 by the astronomer William Herschel with an 18.7-inch telescope and the discovery was later recorded in the New General Catalog .
NGC 6522 is possibly the oldest globular star cluster in the Milky Way at 12 billion years old.
