The Albertus-Magnus-Gymnasium (AMG) is a general education high school founded in Ettlingen in 1972 . It is named after the German scholar and bishop Albertus Magnus .

Namesake

The naming process for the high school was not easy. Proposals such as “Heinrich-Hertz-Gymnasium” or “Kasper-Hedio-Gymnasium” from the teachers' conference were rejected by the administrative committee. The suggestion of the later first director of the grammar school, Gertrud Zollner "Albertus-Magnus-Gymnasium", met with approval. Hugo Rimmelspacher , the mayor at the time, supported this name. The other city councilors, however, considered the name to be too apolitical in contrast to names like "Heinrich-Böll-Gymnasium". In the final vote, however, the name was voted for.

The school's mission statement has its origins in a quote from Albertus Magnus:

"Search for the truth in pleasant teamwork."

A long-term cooperation exists with St. Andreas in Cologne , in whose crypt the bones of the theologian, church doctor and natural scientist Albertus Magnus lie. In 1992, pupils from 11a at the Albert Magnus Grammar School visited the St. Andreas Church in Cologne for the first time and wrote a booklet about the namesake of their school, Albertus Magnus. In 1997 this booklet formed the basis for a first web project. In 2006 the BG-Creativ-AG of the Albert-Magnus-Gymnasium took part in the monastery life of St. Albert for two days. With the sound, image and film material collected from this stay, the students created a website on Albertus Magnus, which has been online since the 2009/2010 school year.

Student exchange

The city of Ettlingen maintains long-term contact with its partner city Épernay , which is why an annual exchange of students from AMG and Eichendorff-Gymnasium with Épernay is organized. In addition, the AMG was the Comenius School from 2013 to 2015 . Within this Comenius project, student exchanges took place with schools from Nowy Targ (Poland), Istanbul (Turkey), Saint-Brieuc (France) and Belpasso (Italy).

particularities

The Albertus-Magnus-Gymnasium has its own school jazz band.

The school magazine Furunkel , which has existed since 1980, was awarded third prize in the grammar schools category in the 2006 school newspaper competition organized by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Education and Research.

In the nationwide student quiz "Economic Knowledge in Competition", the 9b of the Albertus Magnus Gymnasium was awarded the title of "best class" in the Karlsruhe district in 2014. In the “Talent Factory” project of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology , the AMG was selected as one of eleven schools nationwide as a pilot school. As part of the “Wirtschaft macht Schule” project, the AMG has maintained school partnerships with companies in the chemical industry such as the German Homeopathy Union and the Schwabe Group since 2012 . The grammar school is one of 17 schools that take part in the program Take your future in your hands - in-depth professional orientation at grammar schools of the Karlsruhe Chamber of Crafts .
