The 2016 NHL Winter Classic was an outdoor ice hockey game played on January 1, 2016 as part of the 2015/16 season of the National Hockey League (NHL). In this eighth edition of the NHL Winter Classics , the Canadiens de Montréal won 5-1 against the Boston Bruins at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough , Massachusetts .

Participating teams
During the NHL All-Star Game in 2015 in January 2015, the NHL announced that the Boston Bruins , the next Winter Classic at Gillette Stadium of Foxborough would deliver. A few days later, the Canadiens de Montréal were announced as opponents, so that (in contrast to the previous year ) they returned to a classic NHL rivalry from the original Six . In addition, the schedule of the New England Patriots from the National Football League , who play their home games at Gillette Stadium, was adjusted accordingly, so that the Patriots ended the season with two away games and the stadium could be prepared.
For the Boston Bruins it was the second participation in a Winter Classic after 2010 (against the Philadelphia Flyers ), while the Canadiens contested their first Winter Classic.
As in previous years, both teams played an alumni game at the same location on December 31 , in which well-known former players faced each other in a friendly. For the first time this year, a Women's Winter Classic took place, at which - also on December 31 - the Boston Pride from the National Women's Hockey League and Les Canadiennes de Montréal from the Canadian Women's Hockey League faced each other.

Before the game, the Canadiens de Montréal had completed 39, the Boston Bruins 36 games. The Canadiens (21-15-3; 45 points) were in second place in the Atlantic Division and thus one place ahead of the Bruins (20-12-4; 44 points). Both teams were able to oust the Florida Panthers from the top of the division with a victory . In the table of the entire league, the Canadiens were also one place ahead of the Bruins in 10th place. Both teams faced each other three times in the regular season, of which the Canadiens won twice 4: 2 and once the Bruins 3: 1.
