background

As early as December 2013, it became known that the Winnipeg Jets had agreed with the National Hockey League to host an NHL Heritage Classic. The occasion should be the five-year existence of the Jets since the resettlement of the Atlanta Thrashers in 2011, so that the 2015/16 season was actually planned to take place. The Investors Group Field in Winnipeg, which is the home ground of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers from the Canadian Football League , was chosen as the venue . In January 2015 it was announced that the NHL could not agree on a date with the Blue Bombers and that the Heritage Classic will be postponed to the 2016/17 season. The reason for this was that the Blue Bombers' target date in December 2015 was too close to the 103rd edition of the Gray Cup in the same stadium on November 29, 2015.

In March 2016, the NHL announced the final date for the Heritage Classic, October 23, 2016. For the first time, the decision was made to hold it in the fall to avoid the severe winter of Manitoba.

For the Winnipeg Jets it was the first participation in an open air game of the NHL, while the Edmonton Oilers had already contested the NHL Heritage Classic 2003 against the Canadiens de Montréal . In order to do justice to the historical claim of a Heritage Classic, the jets competed under the colors of the franchise of the same name, which was based in the city from 1972 to 1996 . The Oilers also lined up in historically inspired jerseys.

On the day before the Heritage Classic, October 22, 2016, the Heritage Classic Alumni Game took place at the same location with a large number of former stars from both teams. Participants on the Oilers side included Wayne Gretzky , Paul Coffey , Esa Tikkanen , Mark Messier and Jari Kurri , while the Jets were represented by Dale Hawerchuk , Teemu Selänne , Kris King , Thomas Steen and Teppo Numminen , among others . The Jets won the alumni game 6: 5.

game

The start of the game, originally set at 1:00 p.m. local time, was postponed by almost two hours due to continued sunshine and thus too high temperatures.
