The NHL Winter Classic 2014 was an outdoor ice hockey game played on January 1, 2014 as part of the 2013-14 season of the National Hockey League (NHL). In this sixth edition of the NHL Winter Classics, the Detroit Red Wings at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor lost 3-2 to the Toronto Maple Leafs after a shootout . A new record for an ice hockey game was set with 105,491 spectators . Based on the previous record game ( The Big Chill at the Big House ), the NHL Winter Classic 2014 was subtitled The Big House .

The match was originally supposed to take place on January 1, 2013, but was postponed by a year due to the lockout of the 2012/13 season .

Award process

At The Big Chill at the Big House , a game between the teams from the University of Michigan and Michigan State University , a new record for an ice hockey game was set in December 2010 with 104,173 spectators. This game gave rise to an NHL Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium . In February 2012, the NHL announced that the 2013 Winter Classic would be held in Ann Arbor.

With the Toronto Maple Leafs , a Canadian team was to take part for the first time. This is also due to the Stanley Cup final of the 2010/11 season , in which the broadcaster NBC had noticed increased audience interest, as a Canadian team was also involved with the Vancouver Canucks . Additional interest was aroused by the fact that both participating teams are representatives of the Original Six .

In November 2012, the NHL canceled the 2013 Winter Classic due to the lockout of the 2012/13 season and postponed it for one year. This was of sporting importance insofar as the two participating teams now played in the same division ( Atlantic ) due to the restructuring of the league at the beginning of the 2013/14 season . If the Winter Classic had taken place on January 1st, 2013 as planned, it would have been the only regular season match between the two teams - in the 2013/14 season, however, they met four times (including the Winter Classic).

An NHL Alumni Showdown also took place as part of the Winter Classic 2014 . This comprised two games between former players of both teams, which took place on December 31, 2013 at Comerica Park in Detroit . The Red Wings won both games (5: 4 and 6: 5).

Sporty starting situation

Before the game, both the Red Wings (18 wins, 14 losses, 9 losses after overtime / shootout) and the Maple Leafs (20-16-5) had 45 points from 41 games. Detroit was more successful away from home (12-4-3), while Toronto had significantly better statistics at home (14-8-1). The teams met once before the game this season, less than two weeks before the Winter Classic on December 21, 2013. The Red Wings won the game in Toronto 5-4 after a shootout. At the time of the game, both teams would have been qualified for the play-offs (each via wild cards ), at the end of the season only the Red Wings managed to do so.

game

As in previous years, both teams wore historically inspired jerseys . Various elements (patterns, logos) from different eras were combined in one jersey for both teams. The audience record expected in advance was reached with 105,497. The media interest also reached a new record for a regular season NHL game with 8.234 million TV viewers in North America.
