background

In March 2016 it was announced that the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers will face each other in the 2017 Stadium Series at the Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. Both teams emerged from the expansion in 1967 and thus celebrated their 50th anniversary in the 2016/17 season. In addition, the appointment promised particular attractiveness, as between the two teams under the nickname "Battle of Pennsylvania" has existed for a long time, which is counted among the most intimate in the league. It was the fourth time for the Penguins and the third time for the Flyers to take part in an NHL open-air game.

Originally, the encounter was also considered as the 2017 NHL Winter Classic , but due to possible conflicting schedules of the National Football League - Heinz Field is the home ground of the Pittsburgh Steelers - a decision was made to play it later as part of the Stadium Series. Furthermore, the Beaver Stadium of the Pennsylvania State University was also discussed as a venue, which would have offered a "neutral" venue. However, due to insufficient equipment in the stadium and financial demands from the university, it was decided against this option.
