Matthew David "Matt" Cullen (born November 2, 1976 in Virginia , Minnesota ) is a retired American ice hockey player who played 1648 games for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim , Florida Panthers , Carolina between 1995 and 2019 Hurricanes , New York Rangers , Ottawa Senators , Minnesota Wild , Nashville Predators and Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League on the position of the center . During his 21 seasons in the NHL, Cullen won the Stanley Cup three times - in 2006 with the Carolina Hurricanes and in 2016 and 2017 with the Pittsburgh Penguins. His brothers Mark and Joe were also professional ice hockey players.
Career
Cullen studied at St. Cloud State University during his junior years and played with Mark Parrish for their ice hockey team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . Due to his good performance, the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim became aware of him and secured the rights to him in the second round of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft in 35th place.
After another year at the university with a short detour to the Baltimore Bandits in the American Hockey League , he was in the squad of the Mighty Ducks from the 1997/98 season . In the second row he developed into a decent playmaker. End of January 2003 gave the Ducks their hitherto fourth best scorer in club history to the Florida Panthers off to Sandis Ozoliņš to commit. He was with the Panthers until the end of the 2003/04 season . After the end of the season he played for his home country for the fourth time after 1998 , 1999 and 2003 at the Ice Hockey World Championships in 2004 and won the bronze medal.
In August 2004 he signed with the Carolina Hurricanes , but the season was canceled due to a strike and so he bridged the time in Italy with SG Cortina . Cullen was both in the main round and in the playoffs top scorer of the league and led the team to the runner-up. For the 2005/06 season he was finally able to play for Carolina and won the Stanley Cup with the team . In the decisive game he contributed two assists. With his 18 points, he made it to the top ten scorers in the playoffs. As a free agent , he signed a four-year contract with the New York Rangers for the following season . Here he played one season before being transferred back to the Carolina Hurricanes in the summer of 2007. Since then he has been one of the most successful scorers again. On July 1, 2010, he signed a three-year contract with the Minnesota Wild .
In July 2013, Cullen signed a two-year deal worth $ 7 million with the Nashville Predators . The Pittsburgh Penguins then signed him for a year in August 2015. Ten years after winning the Stanley Cup with the Hurricanes, he was able to repeat this success in the 2015/16 seasons and - after another contract extension - in 2016/17 with the Penguins. In August 2017, the now 40-year-old center returned to the Minnesota Wild as a free agent, before joining the Pittsburgh Penguins again the following year, also as a free agent. After the 2018/19 season , Cullen announced the end of his playing career in July 2019 at the age of 42. During his 21 seasons in the league, he completed a total of 1648 games. With 1516 disputed games in the regular season, he finished 19th in these statistics at the time of his retirement.
