history

In March 1892, iron ore was discovered in the Virginia region . This led to the establishment of the place in September 1892. The name Virginia was a suggestion by David T. Adams, an explorer who had searched for ore deposits in the area. On June 18, 1893, the place was almost completely destroyed by a fire. Weeks of drought led to the outbreak of the major fire. In 1894 the newly built place received city rights. But on June 7, 1900, a forest fire that struck the city again devastated large parts of Virginia. Only the residential areas outside were spared.

In the Norman Mina iron ore mine, 14 workers were killed in a landslide in the open pit in 1911, and 18 people were killed in an explosives explosion in the Silver Mine in 1918. In addition to mining, the forestry and timber industry developed into a second important economic factor. Since the second half of the 20th century, the importance of these branches of the economy has continued to decline, so that today the focus of the economy in the tertiary sector is on tourism and recreation.
