Matthew "Matt" Niskanen (born December 6, 1986 in Virginia , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player . He previously played in the NHL for the Dallas Stars , Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals , with whom he won the Stanley Cup in the 2018 playoffs .
Career
During his junior years he played for the University of Minnesota Duluth in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . He was drafted 28th in the first round by the Dallas Stars in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft .
After two successful seasons in Minnesota (45 points in 77 games), Niskanen decided after his sophomore season to immediately switch to professional ice hockey and played 25 (including playoffs) games for the AHL team of stars, the Iowa Stars . He was also elected to the All- WCHA First Team in the 2006/07 season for his performance in Minnesota . He signed a three-year contract with the Dallas Stars, valid from the 2007/08 season , in which he made the jump to the NHL team in the training camp. Right at the beginning of the season he formed the first line of defense with veteran Sergei Zubov and gained so much experience and game minutes. For his achievements he was nominated for the Young Stars Game 2008 .
On February 21, 2011, Niskanen was given in a transfer deal together with James Neal in exchange for Alex Goligoski to the Pittsburgh Penguins . After three years in Pittsburgh, his expiring contract was not renewed, so he joined the Washington Capitals as a free agent in July 2014 . With the team, he achieved the first Stanley Cup win in franchise history in the 2018 playoffs . After another year in Washington, Niskanen was transferred to the Philadelphia Flyers in June 2019 in exchange for the Czech Radko Gudas .
