Travis Konecny (born March 11, 1997 in London , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Philadelphia Flyers in the National Hockey League since July 2015 .
Career
Travis Konecny was born in London and grew up in the Clachan about 75 kilometers away . In his youth he went through the junior departments of the Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs before he was selected in the Priority Selection of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in first overall position by the Ottawa 67’s and thus received the Jack Ferguson Award . In his first OHL season, the attacker had an average of over 1.0 (70 scorer points in 63 games) and was consequently awarded the Emms Family Award as the best rookie in the league and voted into the OHL First All-Rookie Team. After he had already been part of the Canada Ontario team at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2014 over the turn of the year , he also represented his home country at the 2014 U18 World Championship , where he won the bronze medal. A little later he was selected in the KHL Junior Draft 2014 in 25th place by Dinamo Riga .
After winning the gold medal at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in August 2014, Konecny went into his second season with the 67's, which he led as team captain. After 29 goals and 39 assists in 60 games as well as participating in the CHL Top Prospects Game elected him Philadelphia Flyers in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft at 24th position. He then signed an entry-level contract with the Flyers in July 2015 , but initially returned to the OHL for another season. However, the attacker only spent this in Ottawa until January 2016, since at that time he was given to the Sarnia Sting in a larger swap . Shortly before, he had taken part in the U20 World Cup in 2016 with the Canadian U20 team and finished sixth there.
Konecny finished the season in Sarnia and in the subsequent preparation for the 2016/17 season earned a place in the Flyers' squad, so that he made his debut in the National Hockey League in October 2016 and subsequently established himself there. After the season, the attacker made his debut for the Canadian national team at the 2017 World Cup , where he won the silver medal with the team.
In September 2019, Konecny signed a new six-year contract in Philadelphia that should earn him an average annual salary of $ 5.5 million.
