Travis Sanheim (born March 29, 1996 in Elkhorn , Manitoba ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Philadelphia Flyers from the National Hockey League since September 2014 and plays for them on the position of defender .
Career
Travis Sanheim was born in Elkhorn and played in his youth for the Yellowhead Chiefs and the Winkler Flyers in Manitoba. In 2011 he was selected in the Bantam Draft of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in 177th position by the Calgary Hitmen , but only switched to their team in the 2013/14 season. As a rookie , he got 29 scorer points and a plus / minus rating of +25 in 69 games in his first WHL year , so that he was considered 17th in the NHL Entry Draft 2014 by the Philadelphia Flyers . The Flyers equipped him with an entry-level contract in September of the same year , but initially sent the defender back to the WHL for further development. There, Sanheim increased his personal statistics significantly to 65 and 68 points respectively in the following two seasons and was elected once to the First All-Star Team and once to the Second All-Star Team of the Eastern Conference. He also led the Hitmen as assistant captain in both seasons .
After the end of the 2015/16 WHL season, Sanheim moved permanently to the Philadelphia Flyers organization, who initially played in the American Hockey League (AHL) on their farm team , the Lehigh Valley Phantoms . After spending the entire 2016/17 season there and scoring 37 points in 76 games, the defender won a place in the Flyers' squad as part of the preparation for the 2017/18 season. As a result, he made his debut in the National Hockey League in October 2017 and has been used there regularly ever since.
International
Sanheim gained his first international experience at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2013 , where he finished ninth with Team Canada West . He then represented his home country at the U18 World Cup in 2014 and won the bronze medal there with the Canadian selection. He also took the Canadian U20 team at the U20 World Cup in 2016 in part and reached there with the team a sixth.
