Nolan Patrick (born September 19, 1998 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League since July 2017 . In the NHL Entry Draft 2017 and the center was selected in second overall position by the Flyers.

Career

Nolan Patrick was born in Winnipeg and played in regional junior leagues for the Winnipeg Hawks in his youth . In the 2012/13 season he scored 33 goals and 42 assists in just 19 games, although he had missed almost half of the season due to an injury. As a result, the center forward in the 2013 Bantam Draft of the Western Hockey League (WHL), one of the three most important Canadian junior leagues, was selected in fourth position by the Brandon Wheat Kings and signed by the team in August 2013. The following season, however, Patrick began with the Winnipeg Thrashers , before he was to be used for the first time for the Wheat Kings in December 2013 and this was not possible due to a shoulder injury. He then returned to the Thrashers for the time being, so that he did not make his WHL debut in Brandon until March 2014, with the Canadian subsequently making three appearances in the regular season and nine playoff games in which he posted a scorer point .

At the beginning of the 2014/15 season , Patrick was permanently used for the Wheat Kings in the WHL and quickly established himself as a regular scorer, so that he represented his home country with Team Canada Red at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2014 in November and took sixth place there. At the end of the season, the attacker achieved a point average of over 1.0 (56 in 55 games) and was honored with the Jim Piggott Memorial Trophy as the best rookie in the WHL, although he again missed 17 games due to an injury. In summer 2015 he also won the gold medal with the Canadian U18 team at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2015 .

Patrick made his breakthrough in the WHL in the following season 2015/16 , when he placed fifth on the scorer list with 102 points. Furthermore, as top scorer of the subsequent playoffs, he had a significant share in winning the Ed Chynoweth Cup of his team, so that the league distinguished him as a WHL Playoff MVP and also called him to the Second All-Star Team of the Eastern Conference. In the subsequent Memorial Cup 2016 , however, the Wheat Kings failed with three defeats from three games. Only after the end of the season it was announced that Patrick already in Game 4 of the conference finals of the WHL playoffs a hernia had contracted and completed all the following games despite the injury. The hernia was treated surgically in the off-season and the Canadian was declared ready to play from a medical point of view at the beginning of the 2016/17 season , but after-effects of the hernia caused the attacker to fail again after only six games. After 35 missed games, Patrick made his comeback in mid-January and ended the season with 46 points in 33 games, where he missed the subsequent playoffs due to a knee injury.

Patrick was considered one of the outstanding talents for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft and was ranked number one by all relevant scouting agencies in their respective rankings. He also received the CHL Top Draft Prospect Award from the Canadian Hockey League , the governing body of the three major Canadian junior leagues . However, some journalists expressed doubts about his recurring injuries and thought another first overall draft pick was possible, especially Nico Hischier . Eventually, Hischier was selected at number one by the New Jersey Devils and Patrick at number two by the Philadelphia Flyers . At the end of June, it was announced that Patrick had to undergo another operation to treat the hernia just two weeks before the draft. A few weeks after the draft, the Flyers provided Patrick with an entry-level contract .

In his first season in the National Hockey League , Patrick completed 73 games and got 30 points scorer.
