Nico Hischier ( ˈhɪˌʃiəɾ ; born January 4, 1999 in Naters ) is a Swiss ice hockey player who has been under contract with the New Jersey Devils from the National Hockey League since July 2017 . In the 2017 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected as the first overall draft pick by the Devils. His older brother Luca is also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

youth

Hischier began his career with the juniors of the EHC Visp . At the age of 15 he moved to the youth department of SC Bern in 2014 , where he made his professional debut in the National League A a year later . He graduated in the season 2015/16 15 games for Bern in the NLA, and on loan for seven Visp in the National League B . After the season, Hischier was selected sixth in the 2016 CHL Import Draft and then moved to Canada to the Halifax Mooseheads in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (LHJMQ). In his first season in Halifax, he led all rookies in the league in goals (38), assists (48) and scorer points (86) and was consequently awarded the Trophée Michel Bergeron and the Coupe RDS as the best newcomer. At the same time, he was elected to the LHJMQ All-Rookie Team and was awarded the Michael Bossy Trophy , which honors the player who has the best chance of a successful career in the National Hockey League (NHL). The Canadian Hockey League , which represents the three major Canadian junior leagues together, honored him as CHL Rookie of the Year .

NHL

In the 2017 NHL Entry Draft , it was expected that Hischier would be one of the first players to be drawn, the NHL's Central Scouting Service estimated the attacker to be second among the North American outfield players. In the actual draft he was then selected in first overall position by the New Jersey Devils and thus became the highest selected Swiss in NHL history. Just a few weeks after the draft, the Confederate received an NHL entry contract at maximum terms from the Devils in July 2017 .

As part of the preparation for the season, he earned a place in the NHL line-up of the Devils and thus made his debut in the NHL in October 2017. He was also honored as Newcomer of the Year at the Swiss Sports Awards in December 2017 . In his first season in New Jersey, the attacker scored 52 points and, as the team's second-best scorer (behind Taylor Hall ), played a key role in helping the Devils reach the playoffs for the first time in six years. There they lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round . After confirming his achievements in the 2018-19 season, he signed a new seven-year contract in New Jersey in October 2019, which is expected to earn him an average annual salary of $ 7.25 million from the start of the 2020-21 season.

International

In the junior sector, Hischier took part in the U18 Junior World Championships in 2015 and 2016 and the U20 Junior World Championships in 2016 and 2017 for Switzerland.

At the end of April 2019, Hischier made his debut for the Swiss men's national team in a preparatory game against France. In the last third of the game he not only managed his first international goal, but also a "flawless" hat trick .
