Career

Bridgman played during his junior years between 1973 and 1975 with the Victoria Cougars in the Western Canada Hockey League . As a top scorer with 157 points, but also with 175 penalty minutes, he drew attention. This convinced the Philadelphia Flyers , who were always looking for robust players and selected him with the top pick in the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft . The World Hockey Association also had an eye on him. The Denver Spurs selected him in the 1975 WHA Amateur Draft in the first round as fourth overall.

For the 1975/76 season he was in the squad of the reigning Stanley Cup winner in a row with Terry Crisp . The team reached the final series again, but lost there to the Montreal Canadiens . He stayed with the Flyers until the 1981/82 season . Even if he could not live up to the great expectations, he was a consistent player who took over from Bobby Clarke in 1979 as team captain .

On November 11, 1981, he was given in exchange for Brad Marsh to the Calgary Flames . To his twelve points from Philadelphia he added 75 points in Calgary and played his most successful season with 87 points. After another good year in Calgary, he moved to the New Jersey Devils for the 1983/84 season . From the Devils, Steve Tambellini and Joel Quenneville came to the Flames. In his first three years in New Jersey, he scored over 20 goals and over 60 points. He was also the team captain of the Devils.

In March 1987, Jacques Demers tried to equip his Detroit Red Wings for the playoffs and Bridgman fit in well with his concept. The Wings reached the semi-finals with him twice in a row. After a trip to Switzerland to HC Sierre , he signed as a free agent with the Vancouver Canucks .

After the 1989/90 season he ended his active career. For the 1992/93 season he returned to the NHL as general manager of the newly formed Ottawa Senators team.
