Career
Beginnings in minor leagues
Ed Van Impe played in his youth for the Saskatoon Quakers from his hometown in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL). The defender was active in the SJHL until 1960 when he switched to the professional field and spent a year with the Calgary Stampeders in the Western Hockey League . For the 1961/62 season he joined the Buffalo bison from the American Hockey League (AHL), which served as the farm team of the Chicago Black Hawks from the National Hockey League (NHL). As a result, the Canadian played five seasons in Buffalo, where he won the Calder Cup with the team in the AHL playoffs in 1963 .
NHL
It was not until the 1966/67 season that Van Impe made the leap to the Black Hawks in the NHL, where he subsequently also established himself as a defensively oriented defender. After a season in Chicago he was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft , which were accepted into the NHL along with five other teams. The defender spent most of his active career with the Flyers, so he played for the team for almost nine years. As early as 1968 he took over the position of team captain from Lou Angotti , which he then held for almost five years before he passed it on to Bobby Clarke in January 1973 . A little later, Van Impe celebrated the two greatest successes of his career when he won the Stanley Cup with Philadelphia in the 1974 and 1975 playoffs . In addition, he represented the Flyers in the years 1969 , 1974 and 1975 at the NHL All-Star Game .
His time in Philadelphia ended when he and goalkeeper Bobby Taylor were handed over to the Pittsburgh Penguins in March 1976 , which in return gave Gary Inness and a financial consideration. At this point in time, no defender in the Flyers' jersey had played more games (620) or recorded penalty minutes (891) than the Canadian. With the Penguins Van Impe played only 25 games in the course of 1976 before he ended his active career. In total, he had played 769 games in the NHL and scored 166 points .
