The 1967 NHL Expansion Draft was held on June 6, 1967 in Montreal , Québec , Canada by the National Hockey League . The draft had become necessary because the league was increased from six to twelve teams before the 1967/68 season . The six new franchises were the Los Angeles Kings , the Minnesota North Stars , the California Seals , the Philadelphia Flyers , the Pittsburgh Penguins and the St. Louis Blues .

Since the league now consisted of twice as many teams as before, the squads of the new teams had to be filled with a total of 120 players, 20 for each team, from the existing teams. This meant a loss of 20 players for each team of the Original Six , which the teams with some tricks, such as z. B. the provision of farm team players for the draft, tried to compensate. Still, it was the biggest change in the squad that has been carried out in the NHL to date.
