Joseph John "Joe" Watson (born July 6, 1943 in Smithers , British Columbia ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player who played 919 games for the Boston Bruins , Philadelphia Flyers and Colorado Rockies in the course of his active career between 1961 and 1978 National Hockey League has contested on the position of defender . Watson, whose younger brother Jimmy also played in the NHL, celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the Philadelphia Flyers by winning the Stanley Cup in 1974 and 1975 .
Career
Watson spent his junior years between 1961 and 1963 with the Estevan Bruins in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League . With the team, the defender took part in the Memorial Cup in 1963 and then moved to the professional field as the property of the Boston Bruins from the National Hockey League .
The Bruins first used Watson on their farm team in the Central Professional Hockey League . From 1963 to 1965 he ran in the league for the Minneapolis Bruins ; subsequently one year to 1966 for the Oklahoma City Blazers . After the Canadian had already made his NHL debut in the shirt of Boston in the 1964/65 season , he was a regular with the beginning of the 1966/67 season. Although he had completed a successful rookie season in the Bruins jersey , the team left him unprotected in the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft , so that the newly formed Philadelphia Flyers selected him there.
With the Flyers Watson found a sporting home for the following eleven game years up to the summer of 1978. With the engagement of Fred Shero as head coach in the summer of 1971, the Flyers developed a reputation as a very physical team, which was nicknamed "Broad Street Bullies" . In the squad, Watson was considered a good shot blocker, who was known for his efficient positional play. Since Shero valued these qualities very much, he was the undisputed regular on the defensive and thus played a key role in the franchise's only two Stanley Cup triumphs in 1974 and 1975 . He also received an invitation to the NHL All-Star Game during his time in the Flyers' jersey in 1974 and 1977 .
Watson's successful stint in Philadelphia came to an end in late August 1978 when the Colorado Rockies bought the 35-year-old defender from the Flyers. The Rockies hoped to find a mentor for their young and inexperienced defensive players in the experienced Watson. After just 18 games this season, his time in Colorado came to an abrupt end. During a game against the St. Louis Blues , Watson was so vigorously checked into the edge of the field during a running duel to the puck by opponent Wayne Babych that his kneecap was simply broken and his thighbone was broken in 14 places. He then ended his active career immediately and never returned to the ice.
