The playoffs for the Stanley Cup the year 1974 began on April 9, 1974 and ended on 19 May 1974 with the 4: 2 victory of the Philadelphia Flyers against the Boston Bruins . The Flyers won their first title in franchise history when they entered the finals for the first time and became the first team in the major league expansion of 1967 to win the Stanley Cup. As a result, for the first time in league history, no team from the Original Six emerged victorious from the playoffs. They also provided with Rick MacLeish the scorer and goalkeeper Bernie Parent to the Conn Smythe Trophy winning Most Valuable Player of this post-season . The defeated Bruins, on the other hand, suffered the eighth defeat in their 13th final.

mode

The four best teams from the Eastern and Western divisions qualified for the playoffs . In the quarter-finals, the first and fourth as well as the second and third on the seeding list faced each other within each division. The semi-finals were played between the divisions, so the higher-ranked team from the east met the lower-ranked team from the west and analogously the higher-ranked team from the west met the lower-ranked team from the east. This was followed by the Stanley Cup final.

All series were held in best-of-seven mode , which means that a team needed four wins to advance. The higher seeded team had home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, the home law changed from game to game. The higher-ranked team had a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games.

Overtime followed for games that remained tied after 60 minutes of regular playing time . It ended with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
