Kenneth Raymond "Ken" Hodge senior (born June 25, 1944 in Birmingham , England ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 977 games for the Chicago Black Hawks , Boston Bruins and New York Rangers in the course of his active career between 1964 and 1978 has contested in the National Hockey League on the position of the center . In the service of the Boston Bruins, Hodge won the Stanley Cup in 1970 and 1972 . His son Ken Hodge junior was also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
During his junior years, Hodge played with Phil Esposito and Poul Popiel for the St. Catharines Teepees in the Ontario Hockey Association , which then became the St. Catharines Black Hawks .
After the end of his last junior season he played briefly with the Buffalo Bisons in the American Hockey League and also came to a use with the Chicago Black Hawks in the National Hockey League . Since the Black Hawks' squad were mostly short players, Hodge, who prevailed in the NHL in the 1965/66 season , was assigned the role of clearer. Since he still had running deficits, he resigned himself to this role, even if it did not correspond to his nature and his offensive qualities were not used.
For the 1967/68 season he was given to the Boston Bruins together with Phil Esposito and Fred Stanfield in one of the most one-sided barter deals in NHL history for Pit Martin and Gilles Marotte . Together with Wayne Cashman and Esposito, he formed the Bruins' top attack line. Now, freed from the unpopular role as a predator, he used his excellent shot and became one of the best scorers in the league. But this new role was not well received by the fans. The more he focused on scoring goals, the more he was booed. The audience had expected an attacker who was playing physically and he didn't want to live up to that. He didn't get along well with his trainer Harry Sinden . When he handed over the coaching post to Tom Johnson after the Stanley Cup victory in 1970 , Hodge reached over 100 points for the first time, which was also due to more frequent use in power play. He also switched his game to a new bat. Up until then he had played with a strongly curved racket, now with an almost straight stick, he added the backhand shot to his repertoire .
When Don Cherry took over the Bruins as coach, Hodge had another problem with the coach. For the 1976/77 season he moved to the New York Rangers . In return, Rick Middleton came to Boston. After a decent season in New York, he mostly had to go to the AHL for the New Haven Nighthawks in the second season . In 1978 he ended his active career first, but returned to the Binghamton Dusters in the AHL for the 1979/80 season. Subsequently, at the age of 36, Hodge resigned for a second and last time from active sport.
