Jean Gilles Marotte (born June 7, 1945 in Montreal , Québec , † July 26, 2005 in Victoriaville , Québec) was a Canadian ice hockey player who played 837 games for the Boston Bruins and Chicago Black during his playing career between 1963 and 1978 Hawks , Los Angeles Kings , New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues in the National Hockey League and 73 others for the Cincinnati Stingers and Indianapolis Racers in the World Hockey Association on the position of defender .

Career

Marotte spent his junior years between 1961 and 1965 for two years in the Ligue de hockey junior du Québec with the Bruins de Victoriaville , before moving to the Ontario Hockey Association for the Niagara Falls Flyers in 1963 . At the Flyers, the defender played for another two years and won the junior double from the J. Ross Robertson Cup and Memorial Cup .

The Canadian then moved to the United States, where he was committed in the professional field by the Boston Bruins from the National Hockey League . There the spent rookie the 1965/66 season and the following, before he in 1967 part of a comprehensive six players transfer business was in May. Marotte joined the Chicago Black Hawks with Jack Norris and Pit Martin , while Boston secured the services of Phil Esposito , Ken Hodge and Fred Stanfield in return . With the Black Hawks, the versatile defender established himself in the NHL and spent almost three more years in the league. In February 1970 he was again involved in a multi-player change. This time he joined the Los Angeles Kings with Jim Stanfield and Denis DeJordy . Chicago received Bryan Campbell , Bill White and Gerry Desjardins .

Marotte spent another three and a half years in Los Angeles and completed his best years there in terms of points. This earned him an invitation to the 1973 NHL All-Star Game . However, the Kings separated from the defense attorney in the same calendar year and sent him to the New York Rangers with Réal Lemieux in November 1973 . As compensation, the Californians received Sheldon Kannegiesser , Mike Murphy and Tom Williams . The now 28-year-old had another two and a half years with the Rangers before joining the St. Louis Blues via the waiver list in October 1976 . There Marotte ended his NHL career after the 1976/77 season .

As a free agent , the defensive player moved to the NHL-competing World Hockey Association for the Cincinnati Stingers . The Stingers had previously bought the Edmonton Oilers ' transfer rights to Marotte's person and then committed him. His time in Cincinnati lasted only 29 games until January 1978. A new transfer with Blaine Stoughton brought him to league rivals Indianapolis Racers in exchange for Bryon Baltimore and Hugh Harris . After 44 missions, Marotte ended his active career in the summer of 1978.

Marotte died in July 2005 at the age of 60 from pancreatic cancer in his hometown of Victoriaville .
