Blaine A. Stoughton (born March 13, 1953 in Gilbert Plains , Manitoba ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player who played for the Pittsburgh Penguins , Toronto Maple Leafs , Hartford Whalers and New York Rangers in the National Hockey League and the Cincinnati from 1973 to 1984 Stingers , Indianapolis Racers, and New England Whalers played in the World Hockey Association .

Career

As a junior he played with the Flin Flon Bombers in the WCHL in the early 1970s . He was his team's top scorer and the league's top scorer in the 1971/72 season. In the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft , the Pittsburgh Penguins brought him to the NHL as No. 7. In the WHA draft , he was selected in the second round as 14th by the Québec Nordiques .

He was immediately brought into the roster of the Penguins, but in his first season he played a lot on the Penguins farm team, with the Hershey Bears in the American Hockey League . After the end of the season he was given to the Toronto Maple Leafs , where he was allowed to play the entire 1974/75 season in the NHL. In his sophomore year with the Leafs, he was often sent on the farm team with the Oklahoma City Blazers in the CHL.

In the WHA, the Nordiques had lost the rights to him in the Expansion Draft to the Cincinnati Stingers , which brought him to the 1976/77 season . There he impressed with 52 goals and 104 points, which brought him into the top 10 lists of the WHA this season. In the course of the following season, which was not so successful, he was handed over to the Indianapolis Racers and in the course of the next season he played in the third year in the WHA with his third team, the New England Whalers . After the season, the WHA was dissolved and four teams joined the NHL.

In the NHL Toronto still had the rights to him, but in the Expansion Draft his previous team, which was now called Hartford Whalers , got Blaine back and he thanked him with an excellent 1979/80 season . He managed 100 scorer points and was the top scorer in the NHL with 56 goals together with Danny Gare and Charlie Simmer . In the following years he was one of the top scorer of the Whalers and was also appointed to the NHL All-Star Game in 1982. At the end of the 1983/84 season he was given to the New York Rangers . He played 14 games for the Rangers. The following year he played again in the AHL for the New Haven Nighthawks .

After a break he went to Italy and played one more season with HC Asiago .

In the early 1990s he was an assistant coach in the IHL with the Cincinnati Cyclones and in the AHL with the Springfield Indians and Springfield Falcons . As head coach, he later looked after the Austin Ice Bats in the WPHL.
