Expansion Draft

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Expansion Draft is a term from US American sports and describes the league increase process. This is done either by opening new franchises or by adding teams from other leagues . One way to fill the new teams with players is the expansion draft . The new teams are also called expansion teams . This procedure is found almost exclusively in the North American sports leagues. There are several ways to do this. In general, the process in the various profile leagues is identical, but there are differences in the details.

In many leagues, franchises can "protect" a number of their players by reporting them to the league by a certain date. The expansion teams are now allowed to choose "unprotected" players for their team. This is done in a similar way to the Entry Draft . There is a limit to how many players you can sign from a team. The teams that lose players as a result of the expansion draft receive compensation from the expansion teams, for example in the form of future draft picks.

A similar process takes place when a franchise is dissolved and its players are split among the remaining teams. This process is called dispersal draft .
