The 1972 NHL Expansion Draft was held on June 6, 1972 by the National Hockey League . The draft had become necessary because the league was increased by two teams before the 1972/73 season with the New York Islanders and the Atlanta Flames .

Since the squads of the two new franchises had to be filled with players, it was necessary that the two new teams were each allowed to select three players from the existing NHL teams in order to come to a squad of two goalkeepers and 19 field players each . However, the 14 old NHL teams had the right to block a certain number of players, i.e. not make them available for this election, so that they could keep their star players.
