Randall Neal "Randy" Manery (born January 10, 1949 in Leamington , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player who played 595 games for the Detroit Red Wings , Atlanta Flames and Los Angeles Kings in the course of his active career between 1966 and 1980 of the National Hockey League (NHL) in the position of defender . Manery, whose younger brother Kris also played in the NHL, took part in 1973 as a representative of the Atlanta Flames in the NHL All-Star Game .
Career
Manery spent his junior years between 1966 and 1969 with the Hamilton Red Wings in the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA). There the defender increased steadily in the three seasons of his team membership. After just five scorer points in his rookie season , he finally reached 29 points in his third year. In the spring of 1969, the 20-year-old was then signed by the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Hamilton Red Wings served the NHL franchise at that time as a talent factory. In total, he completed 187 games during his junior career, in which he scored 70 times. He was also part of the OHA's First All-Star Team in his last league year.
In the professional field, the Canadian was used by the Detroit Red Wings in the following three game years between 1969 and 1972 in the farm team Fort Worth Wings in the Central Hockey League (CHL). During this period he only made three appearances for Detroit in the NHL, the first two of them at the end of the 1971/72 season in April 1972. Although he had collected over 40 points in the CHL in the two previous seasons between 1970 and 1972, Manery remained unprotected in the 1972 NHL Expansion Draft by the Red Wings. As a result, he was selected as part of the draft of the newly formed Atlanta Flames . There the defensive player received a regular place at the beginning of the 1972/73 season and represented the team in the NHL All-Star Game during the season . With 30 scorer points each season, the defender subsequently developed into a constant player in the young franchise , to whom he remained loyal for over five years until May 1977.
For cost reasons, the Flames Manery transferred to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for Ab DeMarco junior during the summer break . With the Californians, the defender continued his solid game with strengths on the offensive and defensive and again reached over 30 points each time. In the first half of the 1979/80 season he struggled for a long time with initially unexplained symptoms that later turned out to be iron deficiency . After successful treatment, Manery ended his active career at the age of 31 after the season.
