Leamington is a city in Essex County in the Canadian province of Ontario with 32,991 inhabitants (2016).

geography

Leamington is on the northeastern shore of Lake Erie . The towns of Chatham-Kent and Detroit in the USA are located 45 kilometers to the northeast and 55 kilometers to the northwest. Windsor , the county seat of Essex County, is 45 kilometers to the northwest. Leamington opens Ontario Highway 77 in the Ontario Highway 3 . The Point Pelee National Park forms the tip of the headland that juts out into Lake Erie in the south of the city.

history

In the 17th century were French settlers and missionaries in the area. Due to the mild climate and the convenient location, other settlers from England settled. A post office was established in 1854 and a regular stagecoach service to Windsor was established in 1860 . In 1887 a railway line reached the place. At first the station and post office were called Gainesborough. However, since this name already existed for another place, the city was renamed Leamington after Leamington Spa in England. The city was officially founded in 1890. After fertile marshland was drained, the place has developed into a center for growing vegetables until today. Leamington is home to one of the largest concentrations of greenhouses in North America. Cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers and flowers make up the majority of greenhouse crops. The products are produced for the fresh market and further processing. Because of the considerable amount of tomatoes harvested, the place is called Tomato Capital of Canada and hosts an annual Tomato Festival . Many migrant workers from Central America and the Caribbean are employed in the greenhouses . In 1908, the HJ Heinz Company opened a factory for making products from tomatoes, which was in operation until 2014. A successor company took over the facilities and continues to produce tomato juice and canned food.

Coastal towns on the Great Lakes are sometimes hit by tornadoes . In June 2010, for example, a tornado marked as F1 on the Fujita scale hit Leamington. The storm destroyed power lines, severely damaged homes and cars, and uprooted trees two hundred years old. Personal injuries were not to be complained about.

Canadian medicinal hemp producer Aphria has been based in Leamington since it was founded in 2013 . The listed company is one of the largest manufacturers of cannabis products for medical applications worldwide.

Due to the natural beauties of Point Pelee National Park, tourism is becoming increasingly important, with the observation of rare bird species being the focus.
