The Point Pelee National Park ( French Parc national du Canada de la Pointe-Pelée , English Point Pelee National Park of Canada ), located in the Canadian province of Ontario , was founded in 1918 and is one of the 10 oldest national parks in Canada . The park is an IUCN Category II ( National Park ) protected area managed by Parks Canada , a Crown Agency (federal agency).
In 2006, 2,000 hectares (20 km²), national park and the surrounding area, were designated as Dark Sky Preserve ( light protection area , Point Pelee Dark Sky Preserve ).
The park is located on a headland in Lake Erie . This headland is the southernmost tip of mainland Canada. Middle Island , which is the southernmost point of the Canadian territory , also belongs to the park .
Point Pelee is known for its numerous (migrating) bird and butterfly species as well as the rich vegetation. There is also the "Marsh Boardwalk", a boardwalk through the marshland where you can watch dragonflies, frogs, herons, turtles, etc.
The park is open all year round.
