Markward of Hildesheim
Markward († February 2, 880 near Ebstorf near Lüneburg ; also: Marqward or Marquard ) was the fifth bishop of Hildesheim from 874 to February 2, 880.
The name Markward comes from Old High German and means the border guard .
Bishop Markward died together with Bishop Theoderich von Minden , the Saxon great Bruno von Sachsen , the 11 Counts Wigmann, Bardo, Bardo and Bardo, Thiotrich and Thiotrich, Gerrich, Liutolf, Folkward, Awan, Liuthar, as well as the 14 officials Bodo, Aderam, Alfuin, Addasta, Aida, Aida, Dudo, Wal, Halilf, Humildium, Adalwin, Werinhard, Thiotrich and Hilward in the Norman Battle of 880 , a battle of the Christian Saxons near Ebstorf against invading pagan Normans . The Saxon army suffered a terrible defeat.
Bishop Markward is venerated as a saint and martyr . His feast day is the day of his death, February 2nd .
