Nino Pio Ricci (born August 23, 1959 in Leamington , Ontario , Canada ) is a Canadian writer .

Life

Nino Ricci is the son of Italian immigrants from the city of Isernia , Molise . He graduated from York University in Toronto with a bachelor's degree in English literature in 1981 . He received his master's degree in creative writing from Concordia University in Montréal in 1987 . He then traveled through Europe and Africa, teaching English language and literature at a school in Nigeria for two years.

Ricci made his debut as a writer with his 1990 novel Lives of the Saints . The book was a hit with both critics and audiences. He has received the Books in Canada First Novel Award , the Governor General's Award for Fiction and the Betty Trask Award , among others . In 2004 an Italian-Canadian co-production of this novel was followed by a television miniseries of the same name, starring Sophia Loren , Fabrizio Filippo , Jessica Paré , Sabrina Ferilli , Kris Kristofferson and Nick Mancuso .

Nino Ricci was a scholarship holder of the Alistair MacLeod Award for Literary Achievement, York University's Pinnacle Achievement Award, Engel / Findley Award for a Writer in Mid-Career, and is an Honorary Doctor of the University of Windsor . Ricci won his second Canadian Authors Award for Fiction with his novel Sleep , was included in the 2015 Toronto Star's Top 5 Books, as well as Best Book in the Globe and Mail and the National Post .

Ricci is married to the writer Erika de Vasconcelos and lives in Toronto .
