Modern times

After Italy entered the war in June 1940, the fascist regime established an internment camp ( campo di concentramento ) in Isernia . It was located in a former Benedictine monastery in the town center. The first 76 internees were Italians, Yugoslavs , French , Germans , Romanians , British , Poles , Hungarians ; occasionally they also came from Albania and Syria . Gradually, mainly political opponents , members of Slavic minorities from the border provinces, foreign Jews and Yugoslavs from the areas occupied and annexed by Italy came to Isernia. In the summer of 1941, a former cinema was also set up for this purpose. Since the overcrowding was pronounced and the hygienic conditions left a lot to be desired, the Jewish internees were finally distributed to other camps, while the cinema continued to function as an internment camp for Yugoslavs.
