Christian Hülsen (born November 29, 1858 in Berlin , † January 19, 1935 in Florence ) was a German classical archaeologist and epigraphist .

Life

From 1876 Christian Hülsen studied Classical Archeology, Classical Philology and Ancient History at the University of Berlin . His teachers included Ernst Curtius , Heinrich Jordan , Emil Hübner , Johannes Vahlen , Hans Droysen , Adolf Kirchhoff and Theodor Mommsen . He received his doctorate in 1881 and went to Rome on a scholarship to the German Archaeological Institute . From 1887 he was the second secretary of the institute in Rome. In 1892 he married Elisabeth Frommel (1858-1919), a daughter of the theologian, court preacher and prince educator Emil Frommel . Since he was passed over twice in the election as First Secretary of the Roman Institute, he retired in the fall of 1909 and lived the rest of his life in Florence.

As a student, Hülsen worked on the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum founded by Mommsen , for which he edited the inscriptions of the city of Rome. His second research focus was the topography of Rome. He did not limit himself to antiquity, but also dealt with medieval monuments and in particular with views and plans of Rome from later times.

Honors

Since 1905 he was a foreign member of the Roman Accademia dei Lincei . In 1906 he was made an honorary doctorate from the University of Oxford , in 1907 a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences and in 1912 of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . From 1918 to 1933 he was an extraordinary member and from 1933 an external member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences . Since 1917 Hülsen was an honorary professor at the University of Heidelberg.
