Hermann Egger (art historian)

Hermann Egger (born December 7, 1873 in Graz ; † April 24, 1949 there ) was an Austrian art historian .

Life

Hermann Egger studied art history at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate there on July 9, 1900 . In 1902 he became a private lecturer at the Technical University of Vienna and in 1905 at the University of Vienna. In 1906 he became an assistant and in 1908 custodian at the Kupferstichkabinett of the Vienna Court Library . In 1911 he became an associate professor, and in 1916 a full professor of art history at the University of Graz . In 1946 he retired.

Since his dissertation, he has been particularly interested in Italian sketches and sketchbooks as well as topographical views of Rome .

family

On September 22, 1909, he married Elisabeth Stooss (born November 25, 1880 in Bern, † September 23, 1962 in Graz), daughter of the Swiss criminal lawyer Carl Stooss , who had taught at the University of Vienna since 1896. They had three daughters, including Adele Egger, married Sturm (1910–1968), who also became an art historian. She received her doctorate in Graz in 1933 and worked at the Joanneum .
