Heinrich Gerhard Franz

Heinrich Gerhard Franz (born January 19, 1916 in Dresden ; † September 3, 2006 in Graz ) was a German-Austrian art historian . His interests ranged from the history of architecture in the Baroque period through early Islamic art to the architecture and art of India.

Live and act

Franz studied art history, classical philology and classical archeology in Munich, Berlin and Vienna and received his doctorate in 1939 with a thesis on the history of church architecture in Bavaria and Bohemia. His doctoral supervisor was Karl M. Swoboda ; the work appeared under the title "Dientzenhofer and" Hausstätter ". Church builders in Bavaria and Bohemia ”1942 in press. As a scientific assistant at the chair of Eberhard Hempel at the TU Dresden , his work focus shifted to the area of ​​Saxony, Bohemia and Moravia ("Studies on Baroque Architecture in Bohemia and Moravia", Brno 1943 and "The German Baroque Architecture in Moravia". Munich 1943.) Topic his habilitation thesis (submitted to Dagobert Frey ) was: " Zacharias Longuelune and the architecture of the 18th century in Dresden". In 1946 he became a private lecturer in art history at the University of Mainz , where he was appointed adjunct professor in 1950. From 1962 Franz held a chair at the Art History Institute of the University of Graz , where he taught until his retirement and in 1969 founded the publication series "Research and Reports of the Art History Institute of the University of Graz".
