Portraits of archaeologists

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Portraits of archaeologists. Portraits and short biographies of classical archaeologists in the German language is a publication of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) with short biographies of important deceased German-speaking archaeologists since Lorenz Beger .

Reinhard Lullies acted as the editor , who also had the idea for this reference work with portraits and short biographies of important classical archaeologists. Lullies began his preparatory work in the late 1970s; Since 1982 he has been supported by Wolfgang Schiering , since Lullies' death in 1986 the work has been completed by Wolfgang Schiering. It was published in 1988 by the Philipp von Zabern publishing house in Mainz . As early as 1991 there was an unchanged second edition of the work.

The book includes deceased classical archaeologists of all disciplines, both university teachers and museum archaeologists, field archaeologists and archaeologists from important institutes, but also collectors, art dealers, building researchers and important autodidacts. Due to its size, the German language of the researchers was used from the outset to limit the number. The plant thus includes Germans, Austrians, German-Swiss and German-Baltic countries . Archaeologists who had to emigrate from Germany and then often no longer published in German are included: Paul Jacobsthal (England), Margarete Bieber , Otto J. Brendel , George MA Hanfmann , Georg Karo , Karl Lehmann (-Hartleben) (all USA), Peter P. Kahane (Israel) as well as Otto Rubensohn and Karl Schefold (both Switzerland). As far as possible, the individual biographies are provided with portraits of the persons described and, if possible, with their handwritten signature. In addition to the scholars who have been honored by their short biographies, there are numerous other researchers who are honored with brief biographical information in the appendix. Gustav Hirschfeld was represented in both editions with a wrong picture, it was a portrait of the ancient historian and epigraphist Otto Hirschfeld .

The importance of the issuing institution, the German Archaeological Institute, is also shown by the fact that, apart from seven of the 164 people described, all archaeologists were members of the DAI, five of whom were still alive before the institute was founded. Only two of the articles deal with women: Margarete Bieber and Gerda Bruns . Three more women are described in the appendix. The biographies are mostly two-page, the book including a preface by the then DAI President Edmund Buchner and an introduction by Wolfgang Schiering comprises 341 pages.

The people described, who were sorted in the book according to their dates of birth, are arranged in a table and can be freely sorted according to alphabet, year of birth and death and according to biographers:

Ernst Kirsten and Wilhelm Kraiker could no longer be considered for editorial reasons.

There are 71 short biographical abstracts and mentions in a specially created six-page appendix:

Lullies and Schiering wrote a significant part of the biographies themselves. Many of the biographies were written by colleagues, students or successors in university chairs or during excavations. Some articles had previously appeared elsewhere or were based on older works, in several cases the editors compiled the new biographies directly from older works or shortened older texts (these are marked with after , which refers to the original author or authors). Heinrich Ludwig Urlichs is briefly described in the article by his father Karl Ludwig von Urlichs.

Within a short time the book developed into a standard work, but the extended new edition hoped for by reviewers, especially since the processing of the Biographica collection of the more than 5000 former and current DAI members in the archive of the DAI, has not yet materialized.
