Volkmar von Graeve

Volkmar von Graeve (born November 7, 1938 ) is a German classical archaeologist .

Volkmar von Graeve studied from 1959 to 1966 at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and the Ruprecht Karls University in Heidelberg, classical archeology, ancient history and art history . He received his doctorate in Frankfurt in 1966, the subject of the dissertation was The Alexander Sarcophagus and His Workshop . In 1967/68 he toured the Mediterranean with a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . In 1969 von Graeve worked as an assistant at the Archaeological Institute of the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg , and from 1970 to 1972 he headed the excavations of the Palace of Demetrias in Thessaly . The habilitation followed in 1976 in Freiburg on painted steles from Demetrias. Until 1987 he taught as a university lecturer at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. In 1988 Graeve was appointed to the chair at the Ruhr University in Bochum . He also became managing director of the local institute for archeology and excavation director in Miletus .

Since 1992 von Graeve has been an expert reviewer for the German Research Foundation and since 1996 a member of the central management of the German Archaeological Institute. Von Graeve researches ancient painting, archaic sculptures and terracottas from Miletus and the portraits of Alexander the Great . He is editor of the series Studies on Ancient Painting and Coloring and Milesian Research .
