Hans Lauter (archaeologist)

Hans K. Lauter (born January 14, 1941 in Nuremberg ; † February 7, 2007 ) was a German classical archaeologist .

Life

Lauter studied Classical Archeology at the Universities of Erlangen , La Sapienza in Rome and Bonn . There he was in 1967 Ernst Langlotz with the work the chronology of Roman copies of originals of the fifth century doctorate . He then received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute for 1967/68 . The Habilitation took place in 1972 at the University of Erlangen, where he was following academic advice worked. In 1979, he succeeded Bernard Andreae as a full professor of classical archeology at the University of Bochum . In the same year he became a member of the German Archaeological Institute . In the 1986/87 winter semester, he represented the vacant professorship for Classical Archeology at the University of Marburg , before he became Full Professor of Classical Archeology there in January 1987 - again in successor to Andreaes.

Lauter's main areas of research were Greek sculpture, Greek and Italian architecture, especially Hellenism , and the geography of ancient Greece , especially Attica . His most important excavation was that of the early Mycenaean fortress of Kiapha Thiti near the Attic town of Varkiza, which was published in monographic contributions in the Marburg Winckelmann programs . Since 1991 he has carried out excavations in the Greek ancient city of Megalopolis , the capital of Arcadia . Hans Lauter, who had been married to the archaeologist Heide Bufé since 1967, put together an extensive collection of ceramic vessels and shards from various periods, which he bequeathed to the University of Bochum. It formed the basis of the teaching collection of ancient ceramics at the Institute for Archaeological Sciences at the University of Bochum.
