Ludwig von Sybel
Ludwig von Sybel (born July 1, 1846 in Marburg ; † March 26, 1929 there ) was a German classical archaeologist .
Life
He comes from an old Protestant family of pastors and teachers who originally lived in Soest and were very wealthy by marriage. His father was the historian and politician Heinrich von Sybel (1817–1895), his uncle the economic politician Alexander von Sybel (1823–1902). He studied archeology and classical philology in Göttingen and Bonn . In 1872 he qualified as a professor in Marburg for classical philology; In 1877 he was appointed Associate Professor of Classical Archeology there. Study trips took him to Italy from 1871 to 1872, to Paris and Greece from 1879 to 1880, and to England in 1886. On March 23, 1888, he was appointed full professor of Classical Archeology and Art History; In 1898/99 he was dean of the philosophy faculty and in 1906/07 he was rector of his university. In 1908 he was awarded the title of secret councilor. At the end of the summer semester of 1911 he was retired.
Sybel's significance for Christian archeology is that he no longer presented early Christian art as a source or illustration of theology and church history or as a preliminary stage to Christian art of the Middle Ages and modern times , but as an artistic creation in its own right at the end of antiquity .
Since September 3, 1883, he was married to the factory owner's daughter Adele Keller and had two children, the philosopher Alfred von Sybel (1885–1945) and the daughter Bertha, married. Stäubli (1888–1971).
