Guido Kaschnitz from Weinberg

Guido Freiherr Kaschnitz von Weinberg (born June 28, 1890 in Vienna , † September 1, 1958 in Frankfurt am Main ) was an Austrian classical archaeologist .

The son of August Kaschnitz von Weinberg, a section head in the Austrian Ministry of National Defense, passed his matriculation examination in 1908 and studied classical archeology and art history at the University of Vienna . He participated in excavations in Dalmatia and on scientific tours in Greece, North Africa and Egypt. In 1913 he received his doctorate with the work of Greek vase painting of the classical period under Emil Reisch . In 1914 he took part in excavations in Kerameikos . In the First World War he served as an Austrian officer. From 1918 he lived as a publishing editor in Munich, from 1923 to 1931 in Rome, where he worked for the German Archaeological Institute and the Vatican Museums .

In 1932 Kaschnitz von Weinberg completed his habilitation in Freiburg im Breisgau with Hans Dragendorff with the thesis The Structure of Greek Sculpture and in the same year he succeeded Bernhard Schweitzer at the University of Königsberg as a full professor . In 1937 he moved to the University of Marburg , in 1940 he went to the University of Frankfurt . From 1953 to 1956 he was the first director of the German Archaeological Institute in Rome . On August 30, 1955, he retired in Frankfurt.

He was particularly interested in the development of Mediterranean , especially Greek and Roman art in antiquity. He was one of the founders of structural research .

Since 1925 he was married to the German writer Marie Luise Kaschnitz . He is buried with her in the Bollschweil cemetery.
