Gerhard Kleiner

Gerhard Kleiner (born February 7, 1908 in Seelow , † April 26, 1978 in Oberursel ) was a German classical archaeologist .

Gerhard Kleiner first studied at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen and then moved to the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin . He finished his studies at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich with Ernst Buschor , where he received his doctorate in 1934 with a study on the Tanagra figures . From 1934/35 he worked as an assistant at the Albertus University in Königsberg with Guido Kaschnitz von Weinberg . In 1935/36 he received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . From 1937 to 1940 he was curator at the Pergamon Museum . In 1944 he completed his habilitation at the Berlin University under Gerhart Rodenwaldt . In 1946 he became a professor with a teaching position at the University of Berlin, and in 1948 he was re-qualified at the University of Hamburg . After the war he was responsible for looking after the ancient coins in the State Coin Collection in Munich . In Hamburg he was appointed professor and taught there from 1950 to 1952. He was then involved in the reconstruction of the German Archaeological Institute in Istanbul ; In 1954 he was elected its second director. From the summer semester of 1956 until his retirement in 1973 he taught at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . His successor in Frankfurt was Hans von Steuben . In 1958, Kleiner took over the excavation management in Miletus .

Hellenism and the excavations of Miletus belonged to Kleiner's work .
