Hans von Steuben (born July 15, 1929 in Hamburg , † July 27, 2008 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German classical archaeologist .

As the son of the bank clerk Kurt von Steuben and his wife Elfriede Güttler, he grew up in Babelsberg . After graduating from high school, he first studied medicine, but then, after studying in Tübingen and Berlin , devoted himself to classical archeology in Freiburg with Walter-Herwig Schuchardt . On 29 July 1960 he was with the work Say representations on Corinthian and Attic vases in Freiburg doctorate . In 1961/62 he received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute .

From 1960 to 1965 he was involved in the preparation of the fourth edition of the Guide to the Public Collections of Classical Antiquities in Rome . He then worked as an assistant at the University of Göttingen until 1971 , where he also received his habilitation . From 1973 until his retirement in 1994 he was Professor of Classical Archeology at the University of Frankfurt . His project, Donations by Hellenistic Rulers to Greek Cities and Sanctuaries , run jointly with Walter Ameling and Klaus Bringmann and funded by the German Research Foundation , was awarded a research prize in 1989.

Steuben's focus was on classical sculpture and Greek art. The questions that dealt with the artistic form of expression preoccupied him so much that he looked for the legalities of art in the forms of expression. He was editor of Beck's Archaeological Library and co-editor of the sources and research on the Ancient World .

When he died on July 27, 2008 after a long illness, the family dedicated the saying of Parmenides in the Prooimion to him :

It is the path of conviction, because it goes with the truth
