Klaus Bringmann

Klaus Karlwilli Bringmann (born May 28, 1936 in Bad Wildungen ; † July 14, 2021 ) was a German ancient historian .

Life and accomplishments

Bringmann studied history , classical philology and philosophy at the Universities of Marburg and Munich from 1956 to 1962 . His teacher in Marburg was Fritz Taeger . After Taeger's death in August 1960, Bringmann completed his dissertation under the direction of Karl Christ . He received his doctorate in 1962 at the University of Marburg and completed his habilitation in 1969 at the University of Marburg with studies on the late Cicero . Since 1971 Bringmann has taught Classical Philology at the Philipps University of Marburg and since 1973 Ancient Historyat the Technical University of Darmstadt .

From 1981 until his retirement in 2000 he taught as professor for ancient history at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt .

In 1987/88 and 1993/94 he was visiting scholar at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton . Bringmann had been a member of the German Archaeological Institute since 1988 .

Bringmann's research focuses on Roman history from the Republic to late antiquity , the history of Hellenism , Jewish history in the Hellenistic and Roman times and the history of Christianity in the Roman Empire. In addition, he led the project “Donations from Hellenistic rulers to Greek cities and shrines” together with Professor of Classical Archeology Hans von Steuben . Later he was one of the directors of the interdisciplinary research college "Knowledge Culture and Social Change".

He was married from 1965 and had three sons.
