Peter Scholz (ancient historian)

Peter Scholz (born March 28, 1965 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German ancient historian .

Peter Scholz studied Ancient History, Greek Philology and Classical Archeology at the Universities of Frankfurt and Marburg . After completing his master's degree in 1990, he was a research assistant at the University of Frankfurt from 1991 to 1996, where he received his doctorate in 1996 with the thesis The Philosopher and Politics under Klaus Bringmann . In 1997/98 he was a research assistant in Frankfurt on the DFG research project "Foundations and Donations of Hellenistic Rulers", then as a research assistant until 2006 at the research college / Collaborative Research Center "Knowledge Culture and Social Change", interrupted by two fellowships onHarvard Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, DC , (2003/2004) and at the Historisches Kolleg Munich (2004/2005). In 2005, Scholz completed his habilitation with a thesis on the socialization and education of the Roman Senate aristocracy during the republican era . In 2006 he received a Heisenberg scholarship at the University of Cologne and took over professorial positions at the universities of Darmstadt and Tübingen . Since April 2008 he has been Eckart Olshausen's successor in the chair for ancient history and culture at the University of Stuttgart . In 2009/10 he was Managing Director of the Historical Institute of the University of Stuttgart, from October 2010 to September 2018 he was Dean of the Philosophical-Historical Faculty 9 of the University of Stuttgart.

Scholz's work focuses on Greek social and cultural history, the Roman Republic, ancient political theory, and upbringing and education in ancient times.

Scholz is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Academy for Spoken Word in Stuttgart.
