Hans Beck (historian)

Hans Beck (born April 22, 1969 in Werneck ) is a German ancient historian .

Hans Beck was born in 1997 at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg with a thesis on the subject of Polis and Koinon. Studies on the history and structure of the Greek federal states in the 4th century BC . Chr doctorate. He then worked as a research assistant at the University of Cologne and later at the University of Frankfurt am Main . In 2004 he completed his habilitation in Cologne with the work career and hierarchy. The Roman aristocracy and the beginnings of the cursus honorum in the middle republic . At the end of 2018, he moved to the University of Münster as the successor to Peter Funke .

Beck is a specialist in classical Greece and the Roman Republic . He deals with governments and federations in Greece, the political culture in Rome , the ancient aristocracy and ancient historiography . He is characterized by a large number of publications, with the New Pauly alone he contributed more than 80 articles between 1998 and 2002, mainly on Greek history, prosopography and geography, including several main articles. He is co-editor of the Göttingen Forum for Classical Studies and of Hermes, the journal for classical philology . In 2015 Beck received an Anneliese Maier Research Award , and in 2018 he was elected to the Royal Society of Canada .
