Kurt Stade

Kurt Stade (born February 6, 1899 in Krautheim , † January 15, 1971 in Münster ) was a German ancient historian .

Kurt Stade studied from 1919 to 1926 at the University of Frankfurt am Main , where he received his doctorate in 1926 with the thesis The Politician Diocletian and the Last Great Persecution of Christians under Matthias Gelzer . In 1927/28 he was awarded a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute for his dissertation . In 1928 he became an assistant at the Reichs-Limeskommission (RLK), in 1929 he completed his habilitation with Walther Kolbe at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau , where he became a university lecturer. Since 1931 he was also on the Roman-Germanic Commissionemployed since 1935 as its acting second director. In 1937 Stade succeeded Fritz Taeger at the chair for ancient history at the University of Giessen , and in 1941 succeeded Lothar Wickert at the University of Königsberg . After the Second World War , Stade first became a visiting professor at the University of Münster in 1950 . In 1956 he became the first holder of the still extraordinary second professorship for ancient history at the university, in 1959 he became the first full professor of the second chair. His successor was Ruth Altheim-Stiehl after his retirement in 1965 .

Stade was a specialist in Roman-Germanic relations. In 1935 he became a member of the German Archaeological Institute and in 1953 the Commission for Ancient History and Epigraphy .
