Elmar Schwertheim

Elmar Schwertheim (born July 9, 1943 in Münster ) is a German ancient historian .

In 1965 Elmar Schwertheim began studying history , German and archeology at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster. In 1973 he received his doctorate with a thesis on monuments of oriental deities in Roman Germany , and in 1982 he completed his habilitation on inscriptions from Kyzikos and the surrounding area . From 1988 to 2008 Schwertheim was head of the Asia Minor research center at the University of Münster, which is also connected to a chair in ancient history and has been publishing the series Asia Minor Studies since 1990 . In 1995 Schwertheim began research, surveys and excavations in Alexandria Troas . In 1999 he was elected Dean of the History / Philosophy Department. He held this office until 2004.

Schwertheim's research focuses on ancient epigraphy , culture and history of ancient Asia Minor as well as the oriental cults in the Roman Empire .
