Thomas Pekáry (born September 13, 1929 in Budapest , † February 22, 2010 in Münster in Westphalia ) was a German ancient historian of Hungarian origin.

Thomas Pekáry studied ancient history, archeology and numismatics at the University of Budapest from 1947 to 1952 . His focus was on the history and archeology of the Roman provinces. He became interested in ancient numismatics while still a student. After completing his studies, he worked in the Budapest museums of Keszthely and Aquincum between 1952 and 1956 . In 1956, as a result of the Hungarian popular uprising , he emigrated to Switzerland and began a doctorate at the University of Bern , which he completed in 1959 with a dissertation on Roman monetary and financial history from 161 to 235. The depiction was published in a greatly abbreviated form in the magazine Historia in 1969 . In Switzerland he wrote a research report on the studies on the Imperial Crisis of the 3rd century .

From 1961 to 1964, Pekáry worked as an assistant at the University of Bern and carried out numerous research trips on which he collected material for his writing studies on the Roman imperial roads . With this thesis he completed his habilitation in 1965 at Kiel University , where he worked as a lecturer and from 1970 as a professor. In 1971, Pekáry accepted a call from the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster to the chair of ancient history. Here he taught and researched as director of the Department of Ancient History and the Institute of Epigraphy until his retirement in 1994. He was also dean, vice dean and member of the faculty council.

Pekáry's research focus was Roman economic history , on which he presented numerous monographs and essays. His presentation The economy of Greco-Roman antiquity has appeared in the second edition after three years and is also presented in Italian. The study is still considered a widely used textbook to this day. Another focus of my work was Roman art, especially sculpture. To this end, published with The Roman Emperor Portrait in State, Cult and Society. Presented using the written sources and Imago res mortua est two comprehensive monographs. Hans-Joachim Drexhage is one of his students .
