Gunnar Helén

Nils Gunnar Helén (born June 5, 1918 in Vingåker , Södermanland County , Sweden ; † December 7, 2002 in Nacka , Stockholm ) was a Swedish politician .

Life

Helén studied linguistics after attending school and later worked for Radiotjänst and as a reporter for the newspapers Stockholms-Tidningen and Svenska Morgonbladet .

He began his political career between 1952 and 1954 as chairman of the youth organization (Liberala ungdomsförbundet) of the Liberal People's Party . In 1953 he was elected for the first time as a member of the Reichstag , to which he belonged between 1966 and 1970 to 1976 with one break. In 1965 he became Landshövding of the Kronoberg Province and held this office until 1970.

In 1969 he succeeded Stefan Wedén as chairman of the Liberal People's Party. In 1970 he followed suit as chairman of the liberal parliamentary group in the Reichstag. In these functions he sought cooperation with the non-socialist parties. In the 1973 election to the Swedish Reichstag , however, the party suffered a severe defeat, losing 6.8 percent of the vote and 24 of its 58 seats to date. In 1975 he was succeeded by Per Ahlmark as party chairman, to whom he also handed over chairmanship in 1976.

Helén was last between 1977 and 1984 Landshövding of the Stockholm province . At the same time he was chairman of the Broadcasting Council (Sveriges Radios styrelse) between 1978 and 1984.
