Johannes Hahn (historian)

Johannes Hahn (born December 8, 1957 in Heidelberg ) is a German ancient historian .

Johannes Hahn, the son of the Protestant theologian Ferdinand Hahn , studied philosophy , history and archeology in Munich , Heidelberg , Oxford and Berlin and graduated in 1982 with a Magister Artium in philosophy in Berlin. In 1986 he received his doctorate in Heidelberg with a thesis on ancient history on the subject of " The Philosopher and Society ", then he was assistant to Géza Alföldy . In 1993 he completed his habilitation, also in Heidelberg, with a study on religious violence in late antiquity for the subject of ancient history . Hahn then taught at the universities of Heidelberg, Budapest , Erfurt , Cologne and Freiburg . Since 1996 he has been a full professor of ancient history at the University of Münster . From 2006 to 2007 and 2009 to 2010 he spent a year as a visiting researcher at Princeton University in the US state of New Jersey . In 2013 he lectured as visiting professor at the University of Erlangen and in June 2015 at the CEU Budapest .

Hahn's research focuses on the cultural , religious and social history of the Roman Empire and late antiquity , especially of the eastern Mediterranean , as well as the cultural history of early Hellenism - especially of the East - as well as ancient natural sciences (especially medicine ) and ancient philosophy .

Hahn is co-editor of the book series Studies and Texts on Antiquity and Christianity (since 1998), Historical Studies (since 1999) and Religions in the Graeco-Roman World (since 2003).
