Then he was a research fellow in Egypt until 1928 . In 1930 Stier completed his habilitation in Berlin with the thesis The Panhellenic Idea and Isokrates . The work as a whole remained unprinted. In Berlin he was a private lecturer until 1935 and in 1936 he became an associate professor for ancient history in Münster. He then represented the subject there as a full professor until 1970.

Scientific activity

Taurus was scientifically influenced mainly by Eduard Meyer and the philosopher Eduard Spranger . He felt that he belonged to Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff's research direction. His book Basics and the Meaning of Greek History begins with an overview of the image of Greece in research and culture, then uses the “Hellenic name” as a guide to the unity of Greek history and its epochs, to end with a discussion of its “meaning” : "Like Greek culture and art [...] Greek history reveals to us a life that corresponds to our most secret essence - out of the spirit of freedom." Later, too, he mainly worked on the historical significance of Hellenism. He wrote numerous writings on Greek and Roman history, whereby he tried above all to draw lessons for the present. So he closes his investigation into the decline of the Hellenistic world and the rise of Rome with the warning: “We hear a warning from history to Europe. You can ignore it, you can respect it - above all you should be grateful for the help that it, rightly understood, can give to our politics. ”In the long term, Stier made only a small impression in his subject, despite extensive publication activity rarely cited today.

In 1945 he was a member of the denazification committee of the University of Münster . In terms of science policy, Stier was one of the initiators to expand the working group for research in North Rhine-Westphalia (later the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences ) to include the integration of the humanities and theology .

Politically, Stier had been a member of the CDU since 1945 and was deputy chairman of the party in Münster from 1946 to 1954. He was also active in the Protestant working group of the Union. Later he was also a board member of the party in Westphalia-Lippe and a member of the state presidium. In the federal party he was chairman of the cultural policy committee.

In 1946 Stier was a member of the advisory provincial council for Westphalia . He was then a member of the appointed state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia . He then remained a member of parliament for various constituencies until 1970. From 1947 to 1966 he was deputy chairman of the culture committee.

From July 1955 to 1956 he was a member of the personnel appraisal committee for the new Bundeswehr .
