Bernd Michael Haunfelder (born February 17, 1951 in Würzburg ) is a German historian and publicist .

He is a nationally recognized specialist for the biographical processing of German parliamentarism and its parties as well as an expert on the history of the city of Münster . His publications, especially on Switzerland's humanitarian aid in the post-war period, have made him known to a broad readership in the neighboring country.

Live and act

Bernd Haunfelder was born as the son of dentist and later university professor David Haunfelder (1912–1989) in Würzburg and spent his childhood there. The Prussian cultural politician Friedrich Althoff is one of his ancestors . He has lived in Münster since 1966 , where he studied history and German at the Westphalian Wilhelms University .

After graduating with a Magister Artium (MA) and the first state examination for the higher teaching post in the subjects of history and German studies (1977), Bernd Haunfelder was director of the Ruhr Valley Museum in Schwerte from 1977 to 1978 . In 1982 he was at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster with the dissertation The political elections in the administrative district of Münster. 1848-1867 to Dr. phil. PhD. From 1984 to 1999 he worked as an author for the Commission for the History of Parliamentarism and Political Parties in Bonn.

Bernd Haunfelder was a member of the editorial board of the Westfälische Nachrichten of the Aschendorff- Verlag from 1983 to 2011 and wrote articles on local and contemporary history. For many years he was responsible for the editing of the scientific homeland papers Auf Rote Erde , a monthly supplement to the Westfälische Nachrichten . Because of this, as well as his numerous books about Münster and the Münsterland , which are mostly also published by Aschendorff, he is known to a wide audience and contributes significantly to the reputation of the Münster publishing house. These mostly popular science and richly illustrated titles, some of which saw several editions, include Münster and the Münsterland in early photographs. 1841-1900 (1988), Münster. History in Pictures (1991) - one of the best-selling books on the history of the city - and Münster. The post-war period 1945–1965. Pictures and Chronicle (1993). Haunfelder was also involved in books about Clemens August Cardinal von Galen and Constantin Freiherr Heereman von Zuydtwyck . Haunfelder is known in the region as a historical advisor and knowledge broker for many institutions and private individuals.

In 2006, to mark the 60th anniversary of the state's existence, he published the biographical handbook North Rhine-Westphalia - Land and People. 1946-2006 . In addition, he has also to research into the history of the German-Swiss relations, especially the representation of humanitarian aid Switzerland acquired after the war, merit. The volumes Kinderzüge in die Schweiz - Die Deutschlandhilfe des Schweizerischer Red Cross 1946–1956 (2007) and Not und Hope - Deutsche Kinder und die Schweiz 1946–1956 (2008) have received a lot of attention in the press and have been featured in more than 40 newspapers in Germany and Switzerland often presented full-page. Many of those involved at the time spoke up and reported on their positive experiences. The Swiss also felt that Haunfelder's publications were belated thanks for their commitment at the time.

Bernd Haunfelder then devoted himself to the topic of diplomatic reporting by Swiss embassies in German-speaking countries. In 2012 and 2014 he brought the volumes From Adenauer's Proximity to the Research Center for Diplomatic Documents of Switzerland in Bern . The political correspondence of the Swiss embassy in the Federal Republic of Germany 1956–1963 and Austria between the powers. The political reporting of the Swiss representation in Vienna 1938–1955 out. In 2017, Aschendorff-Verlag published the publication Die DDR from the perspective of Swiss diplomats 1982–1990. Political reports from East Berlin . In 2001 he published the volume Humanität und Diplomatie - Die Schweiz in Cologne 1940-1949 with Markus Schmitz . In the so far largely unpublished reports of the Swiss Consul General in Cologne and close friend of the future Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, Franz-Rudolf von Weiss , to the Berlin embassy of his country or to the Federal Political Department in Bern, the date of June 24 was found 1942 an early reference to the murder of the Jews in the east.

Haunfelder's biographical appraisals of German parliamentarism and the political parties received nationwide attention . These life pictures of German politicians, modestly referred to as “biographical handbooks”, which represent his actual scientific life's work and which he wrote as a private scientific researcher alongside his professional activity, have mostly been published by Droste Verlag in Düsseldorf . The standard works are the Biographisches Handbuch for the Prussian House of Representatives 1849–1867 (1994), Reichstag members of the German Center Party 1871–1933 (1999) and The Liberal Members of the German Reichstag 1871–1918 (2004). Haunfelder, for example, includes members of the Reichstag of the German Center Party in the biographical volumes. 754 members who belonged to the center's parliamentary group between 1871 and 1933, and in The Liberal Members of the German Reichstag 1871–1918. 979 members of the various liberal parliamentary groups. With the volume The Conservative Members of the German Reichstag 1871–1918 , published in 2009 and containing 549 biographies, the parliamentary researcher concluded his series of biographical accounts of the Imperial Diet.

In addition, Haunfelder also deals with contemporary parliamentarians: Since 2003 he has been a freelancer for the German Bundestag magazine, Das Parlament , and is responsible for the regular section of the Personalia of former Bundestag members.

In 2006, Bernd Haunfelder was awarded the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany for his meticulous research into the biographical basis of German parliamentarism . Since his publications on Swiss humanitarian aid, which aroused unusually great interest in Germany, helped to improve bilateral relations between Germany and Switzerland, Haunfelder was awarded the Cross of Merit 1st Class in 2011 as part of the upgrade .
