The Droste Verlag is a German book publisher with a regional focus from Dusseldorf . It was founded in 1933 by Heinrich Droste .

history

The business journalist Heinrich Droste founded a newspaper publisher in 1921 under the name Industrie-Verlag und Druckerei AG in Düsseldorf. In this appeared u. a. the Düsseldorfer Stadt-Anzeiger .

In 1933 he started what is now the book publisher for fiction . It all started with the preprint of the novel Die Feuerzangenbowle by Heinrich Spoerl in the publisher's daily newspaper Der Mittag . The first authors in the publishing program included u. a. Hans Müller-Schlösser and Alfred Schmidt-Hoepke . Despite Heinrich Droste's NSDAP membership, a liberal climate prevailed in the publishing house. After the KPD newspaper Freiheit and the Volkszeitung ( SPD ) were banned , the publishing house took over the typesetters and printers of those papers. Droste's sister, Hulda Pankok , was an editor at the publishing house. During the Nazi era , almost exclusively foreign authors were published in the field of fiction. Some Jews abroad were entrusted with the translation of works. From 1936 to 1969 the publishing house operated under the name Droste Verlag und Druckerei KG .

Trying to come to terms with history, groundbreaking works by u. a. Alan Bullock (Hitler. A Study of Tyranny) and Fritz Fischer (Reach for World Power) . Biographies and memoirs about personalities such as Charles de Gaulle , Werner Forßmann , Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg and Manfred von Ardenne have been published. The program also included the following writers: Hugo Hartung , Irmgard Keun , Alexander Spoerl and Ehm Welk .

After Heinrich Droste's death in 1958, his son Manfred Droste took over the business. There were illustrated books u. a. published with Eugen Roth and Hans Habe . During this time, Droste took over the respected Wilhelm Knapp photo publisher . Droste Verlag has been called Droste Verlag GmbH since 1970 . There is close cooperation with scientific institutions such as the Commission for the History of Parliamentarism and the Political Parties , the Federal Archives , the Konrad Adenauer Foundation , the Federal Agency for Civic Education and the Heinrich Heine Institute . Authors such as Stephan Harbort , Sonja Bernadotte , Avi Primor , Joachim Bitterlich , Walter Brune and Walter Riester published their books at Droste. In 2002 Felix Droste became managing director. In 2015 Jürgen Kron joined the Düsseldorf publishing house as managing director.
